BRTs are seeing tremendous growth in North America due to their affordability and efficiency
High-capacity Bus Rapid transit (BRT) is a growing trend in North America. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) just released , and there are now twice as many fixed guideway BRT systems operating in the US as there were in 2013.
This is largely due to their value for money, adaptability, and flexibility. As an affordable mode of higher order transit, BRTs are contributing to the post-pandemic transit ridership recovery. The same report from APTA states that transit ridership has grown 59 percent from 2021 to 2024.
But BRTs aren’t just transit projects; they are roadway, sustainability, and traffic management projects. They can integrate bikeways, bioswales, or multi-modal hubs. They have the power to drive economic growth and increase sustainability and equity in a transportation system.
