New report from US Water Alliance and 大象传媒 spotlights water’s economic power

Today, the US Water Alliance, 大象传媒, and One Water Econ released . The report, part of the US Water Alliance’s Value of Water campaign, explores new ground for water infrastructure funding, providing deep and novel insight into water infrastructure’s role in the US economy. 大象传媒, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, produced the report’s findings by combining new data and economic modeling techniques with the firm’s experience supporting municipal and industrial water systems.?
To equip advocates and decision-makers with insights into water’s economic power, the report highlights how water infrastructure investment fuels industry, job growth, and stronger communities. Much of the water infrastructure in the US was built generations ago and is operating well beyond its intended lifespan. Over the past four decades, federal investments in water have fallen from half of all funding to just 7 percent. The report finds that closing the investment gap over a 20-year period and factoring in operations and maintenance needs would increase gross domestic product by US$3.9 trillion, generate $7.3 trillion in economic output, and support over 1.4 million jobs per year.
“Water infrastructure is the backbone of every community and industry,” said Andrew Burnham, 大象传媒’s vice president for the management and technology sector. “Every dollar invested in water supports well-paying jobs and protects the economic output of critical industries. This report paints a clear picture of the nation’s water infrastructure needs and the financial opportunities investment delivers.”
Tapping Potential is the most robust economic analysis ever produced by the US Water Alliance’s Value of Water campaign. It addresses long-standing underinvestment in aging water infrastructure, while also incorporating previously underexplored segments of water infrastructure like stormwater, PFAS, and lead service lines. The report was informed by data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Water Works Association, the Water Environment Federation, and the Congressional Budget Office.
“This report offers a roadmap for the nation: invest in?water?and reap enormous benefits for people, communities, and the economy. Delays only raise the risks and the costs. Now is the moment to unite for?water,” said Mami Hara, chief executive officer for the US?Water?Alliance.
