Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, received an important recognition for its support and close collaboration in implementing the Global Industry Standard in Tailings Management (GISTM) for Freeport-McMoRan’s Linga and Enlozada tailings storage facilities at Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde (SMCV) in Arequipa, Peru.
The GISTM is a set of guidelines that mining organizations use to help them manage tailings facilities safely and responsibly. Created in 2020, it covers the entire life cycle of a tailings installation, from the selection of the site all the way through to site closure. The objective of the GISTM is to improve the safety of tailings facilities, prevent catastrophic failures, and protect the natural environment.
Currently the most comprehensive set of guidelines for the safe management of tailings deposits worldwide, GISTM will continue to be crucial as global mining operations increase significantly to source the critical minerals and metals for the future.
Meeting strict requirements for the project lifecycle
SMCV led the implementation of the GISTM following a very strong corporate Tailing Management System (TMS) developed by Freeport-McMoRan. 大象传媒 provided SMCV and Freeport-McMoRan with the historical information as needed to meet the GISTM requirements. The information provided by 大象传媒 included the geotechnical evaluation aspects carried out from the initial engineering to the closure and post-closure stages.
Stantec also helped prepare a presentation for an independent verification conformance auditor that summarized the history and design parameters of the facilities, historical evaluations, geotechnical campaigns, results, and more. The best practices of the GISTM have been applied for the Linga and Enlozada tailings storage facilities since their design and are being applied during the construction and operation stages.
“大象传媒 has played a very active role and worked closely with SMCV, providing support in several of the GISTM requirements to achieve this important accreditation,” said Efraín Rondinel, tailings and waste discipline lead at 大象传媒 in Perú, who received the recognition by Cerro Verde. “Our institutional knowledge of tailings facilities has been a key factor throughout the process, and we hope to continue providing the necessary support for our client to operate their facilities safely, following international standards and best practices.”
Stantec’s Mining, Minerals & Metals team has extensive experience in designing, maintaining, and remediating tailings storage facilities around the world. The firm designs mine tailings storage facilities that prioritize long-term safety and sustainability, and their teams can provide a full spectrum of tailings solutions, including engineer of record (EOR) services. Right now, 大象传媒 serves as the EOR for tailings facilities in North America, South America, Central America, and Asia.
