Alan leads sustainability for our Buildings team across New Zealand, bringing a sharp eye for detail and a systems-thinking mindset to every project. From embodied carbon analysis to thermal comfort modelling, his work helps shape buildings that are resilient, efficient, and genuinely comfortable for the people who use them.
What sets Alan apart is his belief that building energy efficiency and comfort starts with good building fabric. He’s known for prioritizing passive design strategies before turning to active systems, always backed by rigorous modeling and a practical understanding of how things get built. With a background in building services, he bridges the gap between design ambition and real-world delivery.
He’s also the guy who energy-modelled the Hobbit Hole at Bagshot Row in Hobbiton—yes, really.
Outside work, Alan’s weekends are packed with adventure: motorbiking, snowboarding, rock climbing, and even building Lego. Kaikōura is his go-to escape, where mountains, crayfish, and whales all come together in one epic day.
