Tashkent Province Sewerage Systems Development

As one of Uzbekistan’s most industrialized regions, Tashkent Province faces a long?standing sanitation gap driven by urban growth and underserved rural areas. The Tashkent Sewerage Project addresses this challenge by expanding reliable wastewater services for nearly one million people across the cities of Akhangaran, Almalyk, Angren, Bekabod, Chirchik, and Yangiyul, plus 70 rural settlements. With Tashkent Suv Taminot (TST) as the implementing utility and support from the Asian Development Bank, the program combines centralized urban systems with decentralized rural solutions to protect public health, safeguard the environment, and build climate resilience.

We’re delivering design review, construction supervision, and contract management across nine works contracts covering networks, pumping stations, and treatment facilities. The scope includes 238 kilometres (148 miles) of sewerage networks, 114 kilometres (71 miles) of collectors, one new wastewater treatment plant, and the rehabilitation and upgrade of four plants. We’re also providing testing, commissioning, and environmental and social management supervision. In parallel, the program introduces decentralized septic systems for rural communities and integrates advanced sludge management and water metering to improve service reliability and resource efficiency, while building TST’s institutional capacity for sustainable operations.

On completion, 800,000 urban residents with centralized sewerage and 136,000 rural residents with decentralized sanitation. The investment will help reduce pollution, improve living conditions, and enhance utility performance—supported by capacity?building, training, and public awareness for the long?term sustainability of the infrastructure.

By establishing TST as a model utility that can replicate best practices, this project sets a new benchmark for climate?resilient, sustainable sanitation in Uzbekistan and opens avenues for future network expansion and service enhancements across the country.
