Tennessee Flood Prediction and Resiliency Implementation

Weather events aren’t new in Tennessee. But recent years have seen an alarming rise in their frequency and severity, leading to extreme flooding, destruction, and the tragic loss of life. After historic floods hit Waverly, Tennessee in 2021, we partnered with the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Department (TNECD) to improve their flood preparedness. Using funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s National Disaster Resilience Competition, we integrated a new decision-support technology to strengthen their resiliency.?

Our team has shifted the entire paradigm of flood modeling in the state by integrating?machine learning flood-risk technology—based on FEMA Risk MAP data—to provide high-quality flood predictions. This gave TNECD the ability to analyze regional flood risks without the need for complex hydrology and hydraulic modeling. Datasets were integrated into the TNPlan Web Portal, a repository of resilience and flood hazard data that helps?communities plan for the next big event.?
